The photographer

Hello! I’m a commercial, editorial, stock and advertising photographer in San Diego. You can see my stuff at www.robertbenson.com. I was born in Minnesota and joined the Navy as a photographer the day after my high school graduation. Did 20 quick years there. Along the way was sent to Syracuse University where I studied photojournalism.

I freelance full time now. I’ve shot for ESPN the Magazine, Outside Magazine, Inc. Magazine, USA Today, Business 2.0, and quite a few other local and lesser known publications. I shoot for wire services also, covering major sporting events in Southern California.

What I really like to do though is portraits. Specifically, portraits of athletes. Over time I hope my portfolio shows that more and more, as good images are replaced with great images.

I do crazy forms of photography too, like tintypes, where I process plates made with an 8×10 view camera in the back of my SUV, using lethal chemicals like silver nitrate and potassium cyanide.

My motto – something Mario Andretti once said: if you’re in control, you’re going too slow.
