Something Fishy
Went to the beach yesterday (or was it day before yesterday?) in La Jolla, California. Gave this model friend, Carolyn Gibbs, my big speargun and a fish, and told her to be a spearfisherman! I think she pulled it off, as far as looking authentic.
The images were “made” for stock. I shoot for Aurora photos.com, and also Jupiter Images and Corbis. Images I shoot also end up on Getty Images’ stock site. I earmarked this for Aurora though, because they kind of specialize in outdoor images.
The fish was bought at a local Chinese fish store…. the entire store has a pleasant fish funk. Now my car, a Honda SUV, has that same odor. The smell of dead fish is a hard thing to make go away!
The speargun was handmade by a friend in Virginia… not for the shoot, I use it in the deep water, spearfishing in kelp beds in Southern California.
Lugged my generator and a flash head and diffuser down to the water’s edge. Was going to use artificial light, but the evening sky was just too good, so I didn’t use it. All of these images were shot with prime lenses and wide aperature, on a full frame DSLR.
